🧳 The Space-A Packing Guide

What to wear, what to bring, and what to keep in your carry-on for a military hop

⏱ Takes 5 minutes

1️⃣ Start With Your Documents

No documents = no hop.

Before you pack clothes, make sure your paperwork is ready.

  • Military ID
  • Passport, if traveling overseas
  • Leave paperwork, if Active Duty
  • Command authorization, if required
  • Space-A signup confirmation emails
  • Visas or travel documents, if needed

✈️ Scout Tip:
Take screenshots of everything before you leave. Don’t rely on Wi-Fi or cell service at the terminal.

2️⃣ Pack Your Carry-On Like It Matters

Your backpack is your lifeline.

Once your checked bags are loaded, you usually won’t see them again until you land.

Keep anything important with you.

  • Wallet and documents
  • Medication
  • Phone charger
  • Portable battery pack
  • Snacks
  • Water bottle
  • Headphones
  • Downloaded movies, music, or books
  • Travel pillow
  • Light blanket or hoodie

✈️ Scout Tip:
Download everything before you leave home. Passenger terminal Wi-Fi is not something to count on.

3️⃣ Keep Checked Bags Light

Space-A rewards flexible travelers.

Yes, some military flights allow generous baggage limits.

But lighter is better.

You may need to move quickly, switch terminals, or even book a commercial flight if plans change.

Our rule: Pack like you’re flying a budget airline.

✈️ Scout Tip:
If you can fit everything in a carry-on and backpack, you’ll have way more freedom.

4️⃣ Dress in Layers

Military aircraft can get cold.

Really cold.

Don’t dress for the weather outside. Dress for the aircraft.

  • Lightweight shirt
  • Fleece or hoodie
  • Light jacket
  • Rain jacket or windbreaker
  • Comfortable pants
  • Closed-toe shoes

Skip shorts if you can. Cargo planes especially can feel freezing once you’re in the air.

✈️ Scout Tip:
Think airport meets camping. Comfortable, warm, and easy to move in.

5️⃣ Wear the Right Shoes

This part actually matters.

On military aircraft, your shoes need to be practical and secure.

Wear:

  • Closed-toe shoes
  • Closed-heel shoes
  • Sneakers or comfortable walking shoes

Do not wear:

  • Flip-flops
  • Sandals
  • Crocs
  • High heels

✈️ Scout Tip:
If you wouldn’t want to climb aircraft stairs in it, don’t wear it.

6️⃣ Bring Sleep & Comfort Items

Space-A is not luxury travel.

But a few small items can make the flight much easier.

  • Travel pillow
  • Light blanket
  • Eye mask
  • Earplugs or noise-canceling headphones
  • Extra socks
  • Portable charger

Good to Know:
Many terminals and aircraft do not provide pillows or blankets. Bring your own.

7️⃣ Flying on a Cargo Plane?

This is where packing smart really pays off.

If you fly on a C-17 or similar cargo aircraft, you may be able to lie down during the flight.

That’s where an inflatable sleeping pad can be a game changer.

  • Inflatable sleeping pad
  • Small air pump
  • Blanket or lightweight sleeping bag
  • Ear protection
  • Small flashlight

✈️ Scout Tip:
You don’t think you need a sleeping pad until your first cargo flight. Then you’ll never want to fly without one.

8️⃣ Traveling With Kids?

Pack for delays.

Space-A with kids is possible, but you need to plan for waiting.

  • Diapers
  • Wipes
  • Extra outfits
  • Snacks
  • Water bottles
  • Tablet with downloaded shows
  • Headphones
  • Favorite toy or blanket
  • Small activities

✈️ Scout Tip:
Pack twice as many snacks as you think you need. You will not regret it.

9️⃣ Small Things You’ll Be Glad You Packed

These take almost no room but can save the day.

  • Hand sanitizer
  • Wet wipes
  • Lip balm
  • Pen
  • Carabiners
  • Extra charging cable
  • Mini flashlight
  • Microfiber towel

✈️ Scout Tip:
Carabiners are underrated. Clip your water bottle, pillow, or small bags to your backpack or seat area.
