🛫 Patriot Express Routes

Several Japan routes operate as Patriot Express missions from the Seattle AMC Terminal.

Historically, Seattle Patriot Express routes have served:

  • 🇯🇵 Misawa AB + 🇰🇷 Osan AB
  • 🇯🇵 Yokota AB + 🇰🇷 Osan AB
  • 🇯🇵 Yokota AB + MCAS Iwakuni + Kadena AB

📍 Main Arrival Bases in Japan

Yokota Air Base

Yokota is about 25 miles northwest of downtown Tokyo. It is one of the best arrival points if your goal is Tokyo or mainland Japan.

Misawa Air Base

Misawa is in northern Japan. It is useful for travelers heading to northern Honshu or connecting through the Patriot Express system.

Kadena Air Base

Kadena is on Okinawa. It is useful for Okinawa trips, Pacific routes, and Guam connections.

MCAS Iwakuni

Iwakuni is about an hour from Hiroshima. You generally cannot fly directly into Iwakuni from outside Japan unless you have the proper SOFA status.

🛂 Immigration Requirements

This is one of the most important parts of flying Space-A to Japan.

You must complete the required passport stamping process within the required timeframe when entering and leaving Japan.

Procedures vary by base.

Yokota

Most non-SOFA Space-A travelers must complete Japanese immigration processing at the Government of Japan Customs & Immigration Office near the base.

When departing Japan through Yokota, you must get your departure stamp before marking yourself present for an international flight. If you do not depart, you must return for a “Not Departed” stamp.

Kadena

At Kadena, most non-SOFA Space-A travelers must go to the Government of Japan immigration office off base. The office is about 15 minutes away by car.

When departing, you may need a departure slip from the passenger terminal before getting your exit stamp.

Misawa

Japanese immigration officials are normally present at the terminal on Patriot Express days. If you arrive outside those processing days, your passport may be held and you may be restricted to base until processing is complete.

Scout Tip: Do not treat Japan immigration as optional. Follow the passenger terminal's instructions exactly.

🛒 Base Access

Space-A travelers, including retirees, can generally use many base services on U.S. military installations in Japan, including the Commissary, Exchange, MWR, and other facilities.

Retirees are generally authorized to eat in the dining facilities at Yokota and Misawa. Kadena dining facility access is more limited.

💵 Space-A vs. Commercial Flights

Space-A can save hundreds or thousands of dollars, but Japan is one destination where you should always compare commercial airfare.

Space-A travel to Japan can take several days, especially if you route through Travis, Hawaii, Guam, or Alaska.

Budget for lodging, meals, ground transportation, and extra waiting time.

If you are already inside Japan, commercial flights may be cheaper and easier than trying to hop between bases. Japanese low-cost carriers can be very useful for routes like mainland Japan to Okinawa.

🎫 Proof of Onward Travel

Tourists entering Japan may be asked for proof of onward travel.

If you fly commercial to Japan and plan to fly Space-A home, airline staff may still ask for proof that you intend to leave Japan.
